Amazing technology for people with limited vision, speech, hearing or mobility is offered by Mark Sturkie, Program Director for Panhandle Council for the Deaf.
As guest speaker for Amarillo Disabled Individuals in Action, Mark demonstrated the newest gadgets designed to enhance communications. People having difficulties using a telephone now have a variety of devices that improve communications while building self-confidence. Mark’s agency has improved the lives of many people who have regained the ability to talk to friends, loved ones and important contacts in the community.
For those who qualify, equipment can be provided at no cost through the Specialized Telecommunications Assistance Program (STAP). Some items include a pendant that can activate telephones up to 80 feet away. A variety of amplified telephones are also available for specific disabilities.
Among the assistive devices is a caption phone that displays conversations as they are spoken. The phone contacts an operator using computer-assisted voice recognition. A text display appears on the phone which enables real-time conversations.
Information about the many communications systems is available by calling Panhandle Independent Living Center or Mark Sturkie at Panhandle Council for the Deaf, (806) 359-1506.
