Established in 1988, Panhandle Independent Living Center is a private, non-profit, non-residential organization managed and operated by and for individuals with disabilities. Our purpose is to assist people of all ages to gain effective control and direction of their own lives. PILC attempts to stimulate and promote a growing sense of personal dignity and responsible community participation of individuals with disabilities through training, community development, and direct services to meet the unmet needs of individuals with disabilities.

What is Independent Living?

Most Americans take for granted opportunities they have regarding living arrangements, employment situations, means of transportation, social and recreational activities, and other aspects of everyday live.

for many disabled individuals, physical and social barriers within their communities take away or severely limit their freedoms of choice in the lifestyles they may desire.

Independent living assistance and rehabilitation through PILC are designed to assist disabled individuals of all ages to function as independently and in as consistent a manner as possible, regardless of changes within their physical status or social environments.

Essentially, living independently is living just like everyone else—having opportunities to make decisions that affect one's life, being able to pursue activities of one's own choosing, and being limited only in the same ways that one's non-disabled neighbors may be limited.
